Unfortunately, rotating countertops aren’t practical. So how do you settle on just one color for your kitchen? You start by doing the following:
Consider the cabinets. Your kitchen cupboards are the most-noticed thing in your kitchen. Everyone has them, and everyone wishes theirs were a little different, so everyone looks at them. Take care to make sure the countertops and cabinets don’t clash. A good rule of thumb is to go with dark-, deep-colored granite countertops if you have light-colored kitchen cabinets. The dark tones of the countertops complement the light tones of the cabinets.
Focus on the refrigerator. Like it or not, your appliances often act as your kitchen’s focal anchor–and it all starts with the refrigerator. People love food, so their eyes naturally gravitate to the purveyor of the dietary delights. A lot of designers suggest making sure your granite countertops complement the appliances. If you have stainless steel appliances, for example, you should avoid tans or golds, which are sure to clash.
Have a sense of size. In smaller kitchens, it can be incredibly difficult to find colors that don’t make the space feel suffocating and subjugating, so a lot of people just pick a color (any color) and live with it. That’s too bad because kitchens are meant to be creative spaces, where your personality makes its way into the foods you’re preparing. If you have a small kitchen, consider installing light-colored granite countertops, which will give the space the illusion of being more open and spacious.
Be bold. If you really want to make a statement, why not go with something bold. White cabinets combined with white appliances and white countertops, for example, can create a simple, energy-filled room. Or even a Titanium granite combined with dark cherry cabinets? It’s your kitchen, so why not be bold?
