First off, not all stone is made the same. If you have a young family and you are constantly finding spilled orange juice on your kitchen countertops, there are certain stones that you will want to avoid. Marble can etch if you leave anything acidic on the surface. That means if you kids spill their juice and it isn’t cleaned up, your countertop will etch. Materials that have high durability are granite and quartz. They are great for families with young kids.
If you don’t have little kid issues, then marble is perfect. The cool surface and veins of color will add an elegance that no other stone countertop can match. If you like setting hot things down on your countertops, you will want to avoid quartz. Quartz is an engineered surface and the special resin cannot take the heat. The natural stone surfaces like marble, granite, soapstone and travertine will be able to take the heat just fine.
Helping with Color
Once you know the type of material you want for your kitchen countertop, you will be able to narrow your search down and look for the right color. Most people automatically think about grabbing small sample sizes of stone and taking them home. We don’t recommend this. It is extremely difficult to imagine how a surface will look in your kitchen from a tiny piece of stone. Instead, we recommend that you bring a part of your kitchen in to one of our locations.
If you want to match your countertop to your cabinets, take one of your cupboard doors off and bring it in to our showroom. The same can be said of your backsplash. If you have an extra section, bring it in and you can use it to find the right color for your kitchen countertops.
Maintenance
Another thing to consider is maintenance. Natural stone usually needs to have a sealant. If you go with marble, you will need to reseal it a few times a year. Granite usually needs a new seal coat every year to every other year. If you do not want to worry about maintenance, quartz is amazing. You never have to seal it, because it is created from a special resin and bits of quartz.
