If you are lucky enough to have soapstone countertops in your home, you already know all about its many attributes: stain resistant; impervious to chemicals, acids and heat; visually striking; and a great addition to any kitchen.

But what you might not know is that even though soapstone is incredibly durable, it still needs some regular care and cleaning to keep it looking its best.
Here are five things you need to know about soapstone countertop maintenance when it’s time to clean the kitchen or dining area:
Soap and water works best
If you’re like many people, you frequently apply mineral oil to your soapstone countertops to darken it and enhance its aging process. If this is the case, you’re going to want to use soapy water rather than household cleaners when you wash down your countertops. Household cleaners with harsh chemicals can remove your mineral oil treatments.
Soapstone scratches
While it’s true that soapstone is every bit as durable as granite and marble, it is still susceptible to scratching. If you find a scratch, don’t panic! It can likely be removed with a light sanding or application of mineral oil.
It’s not always a scratch
Many people panic the first time they think they see a scratch on their new soapstone countertops (which is usually soon after they have applied the first dose of mineral oil). If you see a scratch early on in your relationship with soapstone, don’t panic. There’s a good chance that it is not a scratch at all but only the displacement of mineral oil. All you have to do to “repair” it is gently rub your thumb over the area. And if it is a scratch, you can always sand it out.
It’s going to go gray
Just like people, soapstone countertops tend to go gray as they age. Don’t be shocked by this. In fact, a lot of people like the more distinguished look of their gray soapstone countertops.
Watch out for dents
While you don’t have to worry about your soapstone staining, you should be aware that it has been known to dent. If your soapstone countertops dent, you have two choices: replace the countertops or look at the dent a a little patina that adds a touch of character to your kitchen.
