A Guide to Selecting the Right Granite Color for a Kitchen

The kitchen might be the most important room in your house. It’s where your family congregates, cooks and holds its most important conversations. And, it’s the room where many of us form memories that can last a lifetime. This is why  it’s imperative to design a kitchen that is a comfortable and capable living space.

When designing or renovating a kitchen, selecting the right countertop material is vitally important. And if you’ve already made the decision to install granite countertops — as more and more people are doing these days — the next big question is what color should you use?

The good news is that granite comes in an array of colors, and you can’t really go wrong with any of them. Right now the colors that are trending include tan-brown, Venetian gold, Santa Cecelia and black pearl. Unfortunately, the bad news is that you have to pick one, which can be easier said than done once you start looking at slabs. However, there are some things you can do to make your choice a little easier.

Start with your heart. Sure, there are design color guides and widely accepted rules about which colors work well together. But at the end of the day, you’re the person who has to like the color of your granite countertops. So go with your heart and start looking at colors that appeal to you.

Bring a piece of your kitchen to the showroom. Before you head out to look at slabs, unscrew a door from your kitchen cabinets and bring it with you. You’ll be able to hold it next to the granite you like and see if you enjoy the two kitchen components together.

Bring a piece of granite home with you. Sometimes, you can get small samples of granite from the slabs you like, take them home and set them on your current counter. You’ll be able to get a sense of how they work with your cupboards, lighting and paint.

Take a picture and print it. If you can’t get a sample piece of granite, take a picture, have a large print made and lay it out on your counters. It’s not the same as having the real thing, but it will give you an idea of how everything will work together.

Ask an expert. If you’re still having a hard time deciding what color granite countertops to go with, ask an expert granite fabricator. With years of experience, these professionals can direct you to granite colors that have worked for their clients in the past, as well as give you further insight on their care and cost.
